Mexican Libertad

The Libertad is minted at Casa de Moneda de Mexico, which was established in 1536 to process the gold and silver mined in the New World.  This is the oldest Mint in North America. The coins 99.9% purity and are 1 troy oz of silver.  The obverse features the Independence Angel against a backdrop of the "Lovers' Peaks" twin volcanoes named Popocatepetl and Iztaccihautl. The reverse carries the national seal of Mexico surrounded by previous seals used during Mexico's history.

The coins were first minted in 1982 with a 36mm diameter, but in 1995, the coins were changed to a 40mm diameter.  The coins are shipped from the mint in cardboard mint tubes which allows more air to permeate than the hard plastic mint tubes.  Because of this manner of packaging, the pre-1995 coins are subject to more toning and increased contact marks on the coins.  For the modern Libertads, we transfer the coins from the original mint tubes into hard plastic tubes to better protect the coins from toning and contact marks.

The coins now have a 40mm diameter and will fit in the same size air-tite capsule as the American Silver Eagle.
